Prof. James Shen, Stockholm University

Member & director of SMH 2020.3-2021.5

Prof. James Shen joined Department of Materials and Environmental Chemistry (MMK), Stockholm University in 1993, and was promoted to full professor in materials chemistry in 2007. He is also the initiator and co-organizer of Stockholm Material Hub and currently the director of the project.

As a ceramic expert, Prof. Shen has rich experience in both fundamental ceramics science research and application-driven ceramics innovation for industry. His major research interests include:

       a) Ceramics with tailored structure and properties, especially those for health and industrial applications which could be further converted into practical products with scalable & customized manufacturing & production.

       b) Sintering methods, especially on rapid/non-equilibrium sintering like spark plasma sintering (SPS) and their practical applications, based on the National SPS Facility established in MMK.

       c) Additive manufacturing, including laser-based additive manufacturing for both metals and ceramics and stereolithography methods for ceramics, aiming at customized manufacturing of complex and thoroughly structure and performance-tailored practical components.

Prof. Shen has published more than 200 peer-reviewed articles, the book “Advanced Ceramics for Dentistry” as chief editor, and acts as initiator and organizer of “The International Workshop on Advanced Ceramics and Technologies for Dentistry” (ACT4D). He was elected as Academician, World Academy of Ceramics in 2017, and he is also Fellow of the European Ceramic Society, Member of the American Ceramic Society, the American Chemical Society, and the Royal Society of Chemistry (UK).

Prof. Shen has wide contacts and experiences in academia-industry collaboration, knowledge transfer and spin-off companies. He used to collaborate with enterprises like Nobel Biocare, Sandvik and SKF on ceramics solutions for industrial applications, and recently he has commercialized “Self-Glazed Zirconia” as a new grade of zirconia dental prosthesis that perfectly fits for a full digital workflow of digital restorative dentistry, which is now available in Asia, Europe and North America. Within Region Stockholm he has collaboration with many local SMEs, including Svea Dental Design, Sigrid Therapeutics, and Episurf AB as participants of SMH.

Prof. Shen has unfortunately passsed away in May 2nd, 2021.
